Francis Rawdon, 2nd Earl of Moira

LL 3587

Information

An Irish peer who enjoyed a notable military career and was an intimate friend of the Prince of Wales, Lord Moira was painted by Hoppner on five separate occasions. The first and most important of these portraits, a full-length piece exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1794, is now in the Royal Collection. This undated half-length work has been painted in a rapid, almost careless manner, but its vigour and spontaneity matches Moira's confident public character.
