Information
This watercolour painting is a set design by George W. Harris (1978-1929) for 'The Gardens and Pavillion of the Caliphs Palace' for Act 2, Scene 4 of the play 'Hassan'. The play's full title is 'The Story of Hassan of Bagdad and How He Came to Make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. A Play in Five Acts.' 'Hassan' was produced and directed by Basil Dean (1888-1978) and was a stage adaptation of the narrative poem 'Hassan' by James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915). The music was produced by Frederick Delius (1862-1924) and dances choreographed by Léonide Massine (1896-1972). After its debut in 1923, the play was very succesful and saw multiple revivals. Harris worked closely with Dean throughout his career as an artist, producing many costume and set designs for Dean's plays.
