Information

John Lewis Roget (1828 - 1908), author of 'History of the Old Watercolour Society', noted that that 'George IV Embarking for Scotland at Greenwich' attracted special admiration at the 1823 Watercolour Society exhibition. 'The Times' critic did not seem to have noticed it though in his review of the exhibition. The watercolour was considered unusual for Cox because of it's elaborate composition and picturesque treatment of the scene. The watercolour commemorates the first visit of a reigning monarch to Scotland since the reign of Charles II.
