Girl and Cat

Information

Ceri Richards was one of the first British artists to be influenced by Picasso. He developed a similar modernist style during the 1930s and 1940s. This watercolour shows distortions of the female form and the playful linear doodling also explored by Picasso. Girl and Cat is one of a group of works depicting the same subject that Richards produced in the 1940s. The first drawings showed the artist's daughter holding her pet cat. In later works, however, a model was used in place of his daughter.
