Glass negatives showing Captain Stanley Lord of the SS Californian, Leyland Line

PR/723

Information

Two glass plate copy negatives showing Captain Stanley Lord of the SS Californian, Leyland Line. From the collection of Leslie Harrison, MMSA. The Californian was the closest ship to the RMS Titanic when she sank on 14 April 1912 but did not come to the aid of the Titanic's passengers and crew. The US Senate and British Wreck Commissioners inquiries heavily criticized Lord for his inaction, concluding that many lives could have been saved. Although Lord and his crew were never formally charged with wrongdoing, Lord spent the rest of his life, with the aid of Leslie Harrison, trying to clear his name. Corresponding prints for these negatives can be found in D/LO.
