Grapes

M11121

Information

60 grapes (Vitis vinifera), presumably from a New Kingdom tomb. In Joseph Mayer's 1852 catalogue it notes the food and fruit in case 7 were "taken from the tombs at Thebes". Food, including containers of grain and fruit, were often left in a tomb as a food for the deceased. Joseph Mayer acquired them from Joseph Sams and then displayed the grapes inside a cup (M11120). Professor Newberry noted that they were kept on a pottery saucer with some bitumen staining. Ex Joseph Sams collection 116 (Sams cat. p. 32). CONDITION NOTE 1998: Very dried, surface dirt, white bloom on surface of some - mould?
