Grenadier du Regiment de Lorraine

WAG 219

Information

Copied from a gouache by Johan Christian Becker, painted by him between 1757 and 1763, from a soldier seen by him in Weimar, Germany during the Seven Years War. Detaille has, however, added a grenade on to the grenadier's hat. The higher sword, the fleuret or épée de duel identifies the soldier as a maitre d'armes or an instructor of sword duelling.
