Hadrian

The Roman Emperor Hadrian, recognisable by his full beard, ruled from 117 to 138 CE. Hadrian’s breastplate has sea monsters on the shoulders. The terrifying face of Medusa is in the centre. Medusa was a snake-haired Gorgon whose gaze turned people to stone. This image was believed to protect the Emperor.
