Handle

M12947

Information

High, up-turned narrow handle with grooved outer surface, terminating at both ends in oval attachments in the form of satyr-heads in high relief. The handle was solid-cast in one piece, and must have been attached to a large vessel by solder applied to the backs of the satyr-heads, which were modelled with a smooth edge and rough, recessed centers for the solder to adhere. The satyr heads are bald with prominent forehead, sharp, upstanding pointed ears, bulging eyes, and grooves marking the curls of beard and mustache. Chipped, with some reddish patches in the green corrosion.
