Handle

M12949

Information

Up turned horizontal handle for a large bronze stamnos. Handle is cast, with grooves on outer surface, the tapered, rounded ends set into thin, leaf shaped cast plaques. The handle plaques have engraved decoration of scroll like volutes framing the handle, above a pendant palmette. The eyes of the four volutes are beaten up from the back surface. A narrow, raised border is decorated in guilloche pattern. Handle must have been soldered to vase. Intact, slightly chipped. This handle, slightly larger, might have come from a companion piece to M12945.
