The historian of African art Susan Vogel has argued that Baule objects appealed to Western taste from the outset, because of their stylized naturalism, their ornamentation and in the virtuosity with which they were carved. Richard Hutchings was keen to purchase several Baule works for the museum in the 1960s, because he considered them to be representative of a “famous style province”.
