Information

Albert Lipczinski attended lessons at Liverpool University’s School of Architecture and Applied Art, known locally as the ‘Art Sheds’ from 1901 to 1903. At this time, teachers included the radical bohemian artist Augustus John (1878-1961), and Herbert MacNair (1868-1955), a leading contributor to the British Art Nouveau style. The loose lines of this drawing show the artist’s fondness for a freer portrait style. Helen Mitchell was the daughter of Reverend Canon John Thomas Mitchell (1863-1947). Reverend Mitchell was a church leader of St Bridget’s Church and Holy Trinity Church, and Honorary Chaplain for Liverpool’s Blue Coat Hospital.
