Helmet (mahiole)

A crested helmet with a framework of cane and wickerwork. Originally covered with feathers. Hawaiian high chiefs wore feather-covered helmets and capes on formal occasions to show their high status. They also presented them to important visitors such as Captain Cook as tokens of honour and respect.
