Information

Philip Hermogenes Calderon (1833 - 1898) was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites during his early career. He later became a leading member of the St. John's Wood Clique, a group of artists interested in modern genre and historical subjects, who were artistically and socially inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. Much of Calderon's later works deal with historical, biblical and literary themes. The subject of this painting is based on a misquoted stanza from Lord Byron's 'Childe Harold', Canto 4, Stanza 141.
