Highland Setting with View of Distant Mountains and Loch - Evening (Set for 'Queen Victoria')

WAG 1697

Information

This watercolour painting depicts a set design for the play 'Queen Victoria'. Around the side and top edges of the painting you can see the red and grey curtains of the stage and on the bottom edge the stage itself. Within the scene, several figures in Victorian era highland dress, such as tartan kilts and shawls, sit or stand in groups. On the left side of the stage is a tree. Several hills or mountains are depicted in the background. The darkness of the painting and the sky in the background indicate that the scene is set at nighttime. Only the group of figures in the foreground of the right side of the stage are illuminated.
