HMS submarine E4 beached

Glass lantern slide by unknown maker, dated 1916. Beached submarine E4 of the 8th Submarine Flotilla, Royal Navy. Two men stand on roof of vessel during refloating operation. E4 collided with sister submarine E41 during practice drills off the coast of Harwich, Essex, on 15 August 1916. All 33 hands aboard E4 were lost, with 14 surviving from E41.
