The Holy Family with St Elizabeth, infant St John and two angels (Madonna of Francis I)

WAG 1995.91

Information

A copy of 'The Holy Family' in the collection of the Louvre, originally painted for Claude, wife of Francis I of France, as a gift from Pope Leo X. The painting is dated 1518 and signed by Raphael, although most of the work was done by assistants in his workshop. This is one of several drawings in the Weld-Blundell collection which are copies of paintings and drawings by Raphael. Several of them have a collector's mark on them, a large 'C' (Lugt 474) which has been associated with a collector known as 'Pseudo-Crozat', now thought to be Anne-Claude-Philippe de Tubières, the Comte de Caylus.
