Holy Island

WAG 8444

Information

Short lived and worked in London and Sussex for most of his life. He was considered one of the leading figures in the field of etching and engraving in the early 20th century, responsible for reviving interest in mezzotint and aquatint techniques. 'Holy Island' is probably the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, off the Northumberland coast. There is also a Holy Island on the West coast of Anglesey, but the terrain here is more similar to that of Lindisfarne.
