Julius Caesar Ibbetson the elder (1759 – 1817) was the son of a Leeds clothier who began as a ship painter in Hull and moved to London in 1777 to become a scene painter and picture restorer. He earned his living from landscapes in oil and watercolour gleaned from tours to Wales, the Isle of Wight, the Lake District and Scotland.
