Horses Watering at a Trough

LL 3660

Information

This is a close copy of the landscape of virtually the same dimensions exhibited by Gainsborough at the Royal Academy in 1780. This painting marked a new departure for the artist in its use of large picturesque rocks as a key element of the composition, and its subject matter is unique in Gainsborough's work. The original painting appears to have enjoyed substantial exposure between 1797 - 1814, therefore a number of known copies was executed in this period. This painting is a copy by a unknown hand.
