Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely

WAG 3182

Information

Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, was the founder of Peterhouse during the reign of Edward I. This is probably a design for stained glass. The company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co was commissioned to design figures for decorative tiles and stained glass for the extensive restoration being carried out on both the Hall and the Combination Room at Peterhouse, Cambridge. Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown both designed figures for the stained glass. Like all of Brown's designs for stained glass, the drawing displays strong characterisation and rhythmic movement.
