Mummified head, probably from the Roman Period, with unusual application of painted cartonnage - showing a sylised captive - that may be a modern treatment. Old label from c. 1928 reads: "probably of an Egyptian noble of the time of Rameses II. Brought from the tombs of the Kings at Thebes by Douglas Bladon and presented to museum August 1928". A sample of skin/resin was taken from the back of the cranium in 1999 for analysis which revealed the contents to be: 95% fat/oil, 0.3% a sugar/gum 2% coniferous resin and 2% balsam(?). Donated to Cheltenham College by the Cheltenham Philosophical Institution.
CONDITION NOTE (1998): Extremely damaged particularly nose and jaw, old insect infestation, skin flaking away at back of head, gesso over bindings is cracking, flaking paint, loose tooth and fragments of skin and bone.
