I Don't Know The Name Of This Flower

Information

Nicholson wrote, ‘my paint brush always gives a tremor of pleasure when I let it paint a flower’. This painting is more like a sketch than a finished work, made to record the layers of plants, their shapes and their colours. The uncertain title matches the loose, sketchy style. Nicholson painted landscapes and flowers throughout her career, exploring the effects of light on the natural world. She travelled regularly for inspiration. In 1968, the year of this painting, she visited Italy, Sicily and Corfu.
