Inkstand tray

LL 1385

Information

A tray for an inkstand made in the classical style from blue jasper. The inkstand, LL 1384 and the tray LL 1385, are decorated with white jasper sprigging. Sprigging is the process of making a decorative motif in a mould and then applying it to a ceramic object. The inkstand has two containers and a central classical style column, which would have been used to hold pens and tapers. Pens would have been made from feathers called quills. Tapers were used to melt sealing wax.
