Inscribed Shell (Forgery)

One part of a bivalve shell that has been inscribed with the name Nebmaatra within a cartouche, the throne name of the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III. It seems likely that the inscription was made in modern times. Stuck to the surface is a round sticker with blue border with the number "333 A" written in pencil. Sold as lot 441 "Six mother-o'-pearl Shells, two with the name of Amenhotep III" in the 1906 sale catalogue of the Robert de Rustafjaell collection, sold at Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge auction house (1906, p. 28 lot 441).
