Snuff bottle of flattened pear shape; rock crystal painted on one side with an equestrian and his attendant traversing a stone bridge traveling towards a pavilion nestled within a mountainous landscape, on the other main side painted with a portrait of two horses, inscribed in draft script ‘Painted in the county of Qimen in spring 1898 by Ye Zhongsan, with seal Yin. Stopper with cap of amethyst colour. Ye Zhongsan (1875-1945) was active in Beijing and was known as a master inside-painter. The figures here are painted with a light touch, particularly in the shading of the garments. The detailed work shows both the mature craftsmanship in handling materials, and high quality in landscape painting and calligraphy.
