Information

This watercolour painting is a set design by George W. Harris (1978-1929) for an interior in Act 3 of the play 'The Gay Lord Quex'. The play was written in 1899 by the British playwright Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934) and premiered that same year at The Globe Theatre, London, running for 300 performances. This design is from a successful revival by Basil Dean (1888-1978) at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1923, starring Irene Browne (1896-1965) as Sophy, Viola Tree (1884-1938) as the Duchess and George Grossmith Jr 91874-1935) as Quex. Harris worked closely with Dean throughout his career as an artist, producing many costume and set designs for Dean's plays.
