WAG 1995.108
Information
This chalk drawing is a copy of a pastel portrait in the collection of the Louvre in Paris. The original is by Maurice Quentin de La Tour (1704 - 1788), a French portraitist who also drew Voltaire, Rousseau, Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour.
Previously thought to be a portrait of either Jonathan Richardson the Elder or his son, Richardson the Younger, it is now identified as Jacques Dumont (1704 - 1781). Dumont was a French portrait and history painter, known as 'Le Romain' or 'The Roman' because he had studied in Rome in his youth.
