Photograph album containing 55 mounted albumen prints (includes one loose print at back), belonging to James Howie, Elder Dempster agent. Dated late-19th century. Features images of life in West Africa. Several images can be attributed to Nigerian photographer Jonathan Adagogo Green (1873-1905). The album contains a copy of well known images of the Oba of Bonny, Oba Ovonramwen, on board ship Ivy being sent into exile in 1897.
All photographs in the album are untitled and there are no captions. Titles used for catalogue records of the J.A. Green images have been borrowed from other sources such as identical prints housed in other archives, and those identified in the book, "African Photographer J. A. Green: Reimagining the Indigenous and the Colonial" (Martha G. Anderson and Lisa Aronson, eds.).
