Information

John Garstang’s excavations at Meroë were mostly focused on the city and its surrounding structures. His team also cleared groups of tombs in nearby cemeteries and found large quantities of handmade beer jars like this one. The surface of this funnel-necked jar had been carefully polished with a stone before firing. This technique produced a black shiny surface. Marked in ink with the collector's number (GN 89) and with the find location (321 M10).
