Information

This is part of a group of drawings by British artist and book illustrator Edward Francis Burney, depicting scenes from Greek and Roman history and mythology. In Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece was a symbol of kingship and authority. Jason was sent to retrieve it by King Pelias, so that Jason might rightfully be placed on the throne at Iolcus. Medea, a sorceress of divine descent, helped Jason complete the feats he had to fulfill to acquire the fleece, on the condition that he would marry her upon their return. Their success is depicted here.
