This is part of a group of drawings by British artist and book illustrator Edward Francis Burney, depicting scenes from Greek and Roman history and mythology. In the Hebrew Bible, Javan was the fourth son of Japhet (commonly referred to as Japheth), son of Noah. Javan is traditionally seen as the ancestor of the Greek people.
