This painting is characteristic of Brown's work. He frequently painted scenes of cattle in dramatic landscapes which were popular with the public. It is thought that this painting was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1917. At this time the artist was living in Norfolk and the studies for this painting were probably made there.
