The Kelpie

LL 3619

Information

Kelpies were supposed to haunt rivers and lakes, delighting in causing the drowning of travellers and sailors. They were a popular theme for artists around the beginning of the 20th century, however, many artists seemed unaware of their sinister aspects, and instead portrayed them as harmless nymphs. Draper's nude figure is too realistic to be anything other than a casual bather in a secluded pool.
