South Italian bell krater, Early Apulian red-figure style. Palmettes under handles. Side A: Dionysus seated on throne in form of Ionic column capital, maenad with torch and thyrsus. Side B: two draped youths, one (left) with strigil, the other (right) with stick. In Greek mythology, maenads were the female followers of the god Dionysos.
