This watercolour sketch is a study for an oil painting by Clarkson Stanfield, also in the Walker's collection (WAG 2654). Stanfield and his wife Rebecca (nee Adcock) visited south-western France and Spain in 1851, Stanfield documenting it through sketches as they went.
