Lady and Cavalier Out Hunting with Hounds

WAG 6323

Information

Grant was a portrait and sporting painter. His early paintings were small scale, highly polished and decoratively coloured. Later in his career, he developed a freer and more direct style. As seen in this work, his drawing style was loose and expressive. Here, the subject matter is more fanciful and historic than his typical finished paintings, and the drawing has not been linked to a known painting. Grant was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1851 and President in 1866.
