Lady Elizabeth Howard

LL 3128

Information

Lady Elizabeth Howard was the daughter of Frederick, 5th Earl of Carlisle. She was 18 years old when Hoppner painted this portrait of her. She married the 5th Duke of Rutland the following year. Elizabeth became one of the most admired women in 18th-century England. She was a patron of the arts and an amateur artist. Elizabeth's father said this picture was a good likeness of her. She wears a dress typical of women's fashion in the 1790s. Her hair is loosely arranged and tied with a silk ribbon in a style similar to those seen in classical Greek and Roman statues. Elizabeth's father was close to the Prince of Wales, later George IV. He and his social circle bought portraits by Hoppner, ensuring the artist's success during the 1790s.
