Information
Paul Sanby was a mapmaker turned painter, who often made extensive journeys around Britain and Ireland to create watercolours of scenery and ancient monuments. This work is typical of Sandby's scenes based near the River Wye
Before Sanby's time, watercolour was predominantly used to tint drawings with very few colours available. Sandby's experimentation with pogments greatly enhanced the art form and demonstrated how watercolour could be used to illustrate the varied effects of light and shadow.
