Lamp; oil

This oil lamp in black basalt may be more ornamental rather than functional, as traditional oil lamps did not give much light. Its design is inspired by lamps of the ancient world but it is made for a 18th century house. It came from the home of the designer, Thomas Hope (1768-1831). Hope is known to have visited Wedgwood's shop in the 1790s.
