Landscape Composition

The subject here remains obscure, but may be an illustration of an episode in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Martin has created a carefully constructed classical landscape, its theatrical effect heightened by the statuesque pose of the central female figure. This work was supposedly commissioned by a Liverpool agent for the Sultan of Turkey, but no money was received. Martin eventually used it to pay off a debt.
