Landscape Near Ludlow

WAG 992

Information

The twisted branches of the trees are somewhat reminiscent of East Asian paintings: they are minimally but effectively and boldly outlined using an almost monochrome palette. Like Steer's other watercolour of Ludlow in the Walker's collection (WAG 991), this maybe have been painted on a visit in 1899, but the style suggests a later date. A similar watercolour of Bosham in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, is dated 1914.
