Information

In each of Merseyside’s policing areas there is a SIGMA unit, a dedicated team of detectives who exclusively investigate hate crimes in that area. A hate crime is described as an offence or incident committed against individuals, groups and communities because of who they are including race, religious belief, sexuality, disability or gender identity. Merseyside’s SIGMA units also work to evaluate how LGBT cultural events are organised in Liverpool, assess how anti-discrimination is taught in schools and how the emergency services and local councils can work with LGBT charities to ensure their services guarantee equality and dignity to LGBT service users.
