Between 1898 and 1899 the consulting Director of Liverpool Museum, Henry Ogg Forbes and W R Ogilvie Grant from the British Museum (later part of the Natural History Museum) undertook an expedition to the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean. They spent three months there collecting fauna (the animal life of the island) for the two museums. This was an important research collection recording the ecology of the island at that moment in time.

After the bombings at Bristol Museum and the Botanical Gardens in Liverpool in 1940, the museum staff began to evacuate the collections. Although the specimens from the Socotra expedition were an important record of life on the island only some of the specimens, including the butterflies you can see here, were evacuated. 

Other parts of the collection were destroyed during the 3 May Blitz.
