This is an extremely popular image that has been reproduced numerous times. 'L'Escalier de Marbre, Venise' translates to 'The Marble Steps, Venice'. Frits Thaulow was an improtant Norweigan painter specialising in landscape and working in an Impressionist style. He travelled to Venice in 1885 where he may have made preparations for this print. This version was exhibited by Thaulow at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition in 1906, where it was purchased by the Walker Art Gallery.
