Information

Typed copy extract, unsigned, of a letter, dated 27 July 1911, from J. Bruce Ismay to P.A.S. Franklin, vice-president of the International Mercantile Marine Company Inc, re the latter's recommendations for docking of RMS Olympic on a Tuesday at New York. Ismay confirms his 'repeatedly stated' view that he feels very strongly that passengers would much prefer to know that they would not land until Wednesday morning rather than to be in a state of uncertainty about this for the whole trip. He does not think that Franklin can have ever experienced the 'miseries of a night landing in New York' . This letter was used in the British Titanic Inquiry to show that Ismay was opposed to faster sailing times for Olympic.
