The Little Mermaid

WAG 722

Information

King depicts the Little Mermaid joyfully skipping on land for the first time. Her use of delicate lines and pale, jewel-like colours evoke the magical atmosphere of Hans Christian Anderson's fairytale. King was primarily a book designer and illustrator although she worked in various media. She studied alongside the Macdonald sisters at the Glasgow School of Art where she later taught illustration and ceramic decoration. With her husband she set up a studio in France but at the outbreak of the First World War they moved Kirkcudbright. In this small Scottish town she formed a predominantly female colony of artists.
