'Liverpool Black Sisters' leaflet

Liverpool Black Sisters were a Black women’s group based in L8. They grew out of the Liverpool Black Women’s Group and renamed themselves Liverpool Black Sisters around 1979. They met in various locations in Toxteth before their dream of having their own community base was realised in 2004 when Kuumba Imani Millennium Centre, 4 Princes Road opened. Suzanne Morris was a member for over 25 years – “We made a difference by attending national campaigns and taking part in marches across the country. We campaigned on mental health issues and against the threatened deportation of African women. Our afterschool project picked children up from local schools and brought them to the centre for learning activities which enabled a lot of women to get jobs or go into education that they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to”. Liverpool Black Sisters officially became a charity on 28 June 1989. They have left remarkable lasting legacies.
