Male Figurine

Information

Upper part of a broken figure of man holding something in his right hand. Hollow pottery with red slip. Crudely made and unusual. Garstang recorded this as being Greek/Roman but this type of object is similar with other fertility figures found in Middle Kingdom - New Kingdom graves. Has previously been dated as Old Kingdom. Unfortunately the grave number is not annotated on the object nor within the accession register. The Annual Report for year ending 31st December 1906 has the provenance as Esna ("fragment of a terracotta figure ...Greek or Roman Period", 1907 p. 53) but the catalogue card has the provenance as Abydos. CONDITION NOTE 1998: Incomplete, previous repair, surface dirt.
