Man in Classical Dress

LL 735

Information

We do not know the name of the man represented in this bust, but there is a resemblance to the 5th Baron Maynard who died in 1745. He is shown on the Maynard family tomb in Little Easton, Essex. The sculptor may be Henry Scheemakers or Henry Cheere. Such depictions of classical dress were popular in the mid-18th century as a way of showing a man’s public and political standing.
